History v2

PERIOD BEFORE 1970

Since 1964, Clinical Pathology courses were offered to the first batch of students from the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University (1962). In that initial year, the lecturers were Dr. Soemarso, Drs. Med. RRJ Djoko Moeljanto, Drs. Med. Soenarto, and Drs. Med. Darsito. However, after graduating, they moved to the clinical department (Prof. Dr. Soenarto and Prof. Dr. dr. Djoko Moeljanto to the Department of Internal Medicine, and Dr. Darsito to the Department of Surgery).

In 1969, Clinical Pathology occupied several rooms in the former Co-Assistant Dormitory, Room XII. In addition to being used as offices, these rooms were also used for student practicums. The head of the department at that time was Dr. Soemarso (Internal Medicine Specialist from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia), while the teaching staff included Dr. Soerachmo M, Dr. AP Pradana, Dr. M. Abubakar, and Drs. Med Bambang Soetrisno JS, Drs. Med Noor Pramono, Drs. Med Harsoyo N, Dr. Lisyani Suromo, and several student assistants. During this initial period, the Clinical Pathology Department already had several sections: Hematology, Urinalysis, and Clinical Chemistry.

1970–1982 PERIOD

In 1972, a collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University (FK UNDIP) and Dr. Kariadi Hospital, Semarang, began. The Clinical Pathology Office moved to the Central Laboratory (along with the Anatomical Pathology and Microbiology Departments) and occupied two two-story buildings. Although integrated into the Central Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University/Dr. Kariadi Hospital, these three departments carried out their research and education activities autonomously. However, in terms of service, they were under the coordination of the Head of the Central Laboratory Installation of Dr. Kariadi Hospital, a position held in rotation according to a joint decree with the Director of Dr. Kariadi Hospital and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University.

In mid-1972, Dr. Following the death of Dr. Soemarso, Dr. M. Abubakar was appointed Head of the Clinical Pathology Unit. Several years later, the Clinical Pathology Department received additional teaching staff: Dr. Affandi Ichsan, Dr. Mulya Utama, Dr. Sabardiman, Dr. Latiyani Djamil, Dr. MI Tjahjati, and Dr. Siti Apsari. Between 1970 and 1980, the Clinical Pathology Department sent three faculty members to obtain specialist PK certifications at the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University Surabaya (Dr. AP Pradana, Dr. Bambang Soetrisno, and Dr. M. Abubakar). During this period, the Clinical Pathology Department added several sections, resulting in a total of Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Secretion-Excretion, Endocrinology, and Sero-Immunology sections.

In addition to providing education for prospective general practitioners, during this period, the Clinical Pathology Department served as a place for additional education for residents in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. In the Service Sector, the Clinical Pathology Department was tasked with supervising the Outpatient Laboratory, the ICU, and the Bedside Laboratory. Collaboration with the Clinical Department has also been well-established, resulting in not only alternating meetings between the PK Department and the clinical department, particularly in Internal Medicine, but also the formation of joint teams that would later become multidisciplinary teams to handle special cases. Research activities began in collaboration with researchers from the clinical department and several independent studies.

In the area of community service, the Clinical Pathology Department sent Dr. Bambang Soetrisno to East Timor (1977) for Operation Seroja for three months, along with clinical specialists and general practitioners (Puskesmas), as well as medical personnel from throughout Central Java.

During this period, two teaching staff members moved to the Clinical Department: Dr. Noor Pramono to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department and Dr. Harsoyo to the Pediatrics Department. Two more doctors, Dr. Soerachmo SH and Dr. AP Pradana, retired.

1980-1990 PERIOD

During this period, additional teaching staff were added, namely Dr. Imam Budiwiyono (1982), Dr. Purwanto AP (1983), Dr. Indrawati (1983), and Dr. Banundari (1988). They were assisted by several student assistants who were periodically replaced and appointed by Dean’s Decree.

In 1984, Dr. Mulya Utrama, who was preparing for specialist education at the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University (UNAIR), died in an accident on his way home from Surabaya to Semarang. Several years later (1987), Dr. M. Abubakar died in a traffic accident. Dr. Bambang Soetrisno was appointed as the head of the department.

To adjust the catalog of Residents of Clinical Pathology (PPDS I), an additional section was established: the Joint Team Clinical Microbiology Section. Its formation began before 1980 and is now realized with the participation of teaching staff from the Clinical Pathology Department in the Cardiac Surgery Team, the Conjoined Twins Team, the Trop Med Team, the Gaki Team, and the Oncology Team.

For professional development, Clinical Pathology staff have also become members and administrators of several professional organizations such as IAPI (Association of Clinical Pathologists).
